Frequently Asked Questions
Can anyone volunteer?
We need volunteers of all abilities and interests! In general, we welcome volunteers of all ages, but volunteers 15 and under must be accompanied by an adult. The San Diego River Park Foundation holds events at a variety of locations along the San Diego River, and each site varies in accessibility and being appropriate for young children. Please call us at (619) 297-7380 or email us at volunteer@sandiegoriver.org for questions about specific events, and we are happy to help you find an event that meets your particular needs.
What if I want to sign up myself AND someone else for an event?
We'd love to have you all! You can use the "Sign Up as Group" button instead of the regular "Sign Up" button. When signing up as a group, you can create a group name (for example, "The Johnson Family" or "The Ecology College Club") and reserve additional slots. First, you'll use the "Add Me" feature. Then, if another member of your group has a Get Connected account, you can add them to the group with the "Add Volunteer" button. Otherwise, go ahead and reserve additional slots for as many members of your group that do not have an account.
In the past, I needed to sign a waiver for every event - is this still true?
If you have an account and have signed the virtual waiver - then no! This virtual waiver will last a year, and you won't have to re-sign at every event. However, if you don't have an account yet, or you have someone coming with you to an event without an account, then you or they will need to sign a waiver still. Here are our waivers for you to download and fill out, and bring to the event, if this is the case:
How can I sign up for events if I don't want to create an account?
We strongly suggest you sign up for an account so you can easily sign up for our events! However, if you can't, you can email us at volunteer@sandiegoriver.org to sign up for events. Please let us know in the email what event you'd like to sign up for, as well as how many people you are signing up. You will need to sign a waiver for each event if you do not sign up for an account. To view and print our waivers, read the above question.
Are your volunteer opportunities eligible for community service hours?
Yes and no - some events are, and some events aren't. If you need to get verified community service hours for school, an organization, court-mandated, or another reason, please reach out to us at volunteer@sandiegoriver.org to learn which opportunities are eligible.
What are your COVID-19 policies?
Currently, we are no longer requiring people participating in outdoor activities to wear facial coverings. However, there are some exceptions, such as when working near an encampment. Therefore, we strongly recommend that you have a mask on hand, so you can participate in our events fully if situations like this do come up. It is important to note that anyone who wants to wear a facial covering is completely welcome to do so!
Will any of my account information be given or sold to a third party?
No! You can review our detailed privacy policy here for more details.
