What to Expect: Many of these invasive plant species are small annuals that require either weed whacking or hand pulling, so be prepared to get dirty. Please wear a hat and sunscreen, along with long sleeves, long pants, and sturdy closed-toed shoes for protection. All necessary tools will be provided, but feel free to bring your own gloves or safety glasses if preferred. Don't forget to bring plenty of drinking water and snacks to stay energized throughout the day.

Join the San Diego River Park Foundation's Garden Club twice a month to bring community members together to learn about native plants, gardening, and taking care of a native plant landscape! Located just uphill from the San Diego River estuary, the garden is part of the City of San Diego's Collier Park West, between Ocean Beach and Point Loma.

The Point Loma Native Plant Garden is a 2.5-acre neighborhood park and hidden gem that features many rare and endangered native plant species that are found along the San Diego River. Some of the plants in the collection can be found in most canyons across the county, while some are not found anywhere else in the world but in our region! This garden also features a native plant nursery where we nurture seedlings and propagate cuttings on site. Come visit the community-managed garden any time for inspiration for your own native plant installation in your yard, patio, or porch!

These events will be guided by SDRPF staff, are family friends, and no experience is required! Events take place every 2nd and 4th Sunday of each month from 9am - 11am, unless otherwise stated.

Park & Meeting Spot: The parking lot at SKATE PARK Robb Field (Note: this is slightly east of our regular location)

End: Coffee Social at DOG BEACH lawn area, sponsored by Coffee Cycle Roasting.

One-Mile Action Crew (O-MAC) is a passionate group of riders, dedicated to the hands-on stewardship of the SD River Trail by tackling focused improvements one mile at a time. Our core activities are to show up, cleanup, and fixup the San Diego River Trail & Bikeway.

Come make new friends, combine light exercise with impactful social good, and finish your rewarding community effort with a celebratory coffee social!

Experience a unique segment of the river trail that highlights both the beauty of our local ecosystem and the importance of protected pathways.

Scenic & Wildlife: This route winds through a stunning estuary, offering prime viewing for diverse wildlife and critical bird habitats.

Car-Free Riding: The trail is completely separated from vehicle traffic, allowing for a safer, more focused group ride.

Terrain Note: To stay separated from traffic, the trail passes beneath several roadways. Expect short declines and inclines at these underpasses.

The Urban Interface: As we ride, we will pass through areas with an urban interface. You may encounter neighbors experiencing homelessness living along the riverbed; we ask all O-MAC volunteers to remain respectful and mindful of these shared public spaces.

We are excited to have a diverse crew on the move. To ensure everyone has a safe and smooth experience, please note the following:

For Our Skaters: This path is rated Easy to Intermediate. Because the terrain varies, we highly advise using gummy/soft wheels for better grip and vibration dampening.

Safety First: At a minimum, we strongly recommend wearing knee pads and wrist guards.

The Wheels Survey: Keep an eye on your inbox! You will receive a follow-up email the week of the event with a brief survey.

Action Item: A survey will be sent to your email one week ahead of the event. Please complete the survey to let us know what wheels you'll be riding. This data is vital for our logistics and group ride planning as we continue to build our presence and momentum.

Embark on a fun-filled walk with bird experts Cindy Pencek and Ian Swirka to observe and count the amazing biodiversity of birds that call this section of the river home! You'll not only experience the joy and relaxation of connecting with nature, but will also contribute to conservation efforts through reporting observations on iNaturalist!  

You'll also be able to check out our River Studio at Grant Park, where we're creating a unique nature education center and eco-park that will serve over 10,000 students annually and empower the next generation of environmental stewards.

Join our Preserve Stewards at Boulder Creek Preserve this month to care for the beautiful open space land at the headwaters of the San Diego River! As a volunteer, you’ll connect with fellow nature lovers, soak in the beauty of the landscape, and maybe even spot wildlife like deer or snakes! This month together, we’ll help care for this conserved land by removing invasive non-native plants, and planting San Diego sedge plants that are a host for the endangered Harbison's dun skipper Butterfly — Come plant creekside with us and see what we can accomplish together!

Looking for a volunteer opportunity that allows you to support a healthy river while interacting with a group of like-minded people? Come out with our core volunteer team to assist with River Clean-Ups! If you don't mind getting dirty and doing some trail blazing then this may be the perfect fit for you.

Each year, San Diego River Park Foundation volunteers remove more than 200,000 pounds of trash from our River. Without our amazing volunteers, this trash would be left to pollute native animal habitats, create unsightly piles in our parks and public spaces, leach contaminants into the water, and could be washed out into our ocean and beaches!

Ready to Experience San Diego’s Wild Side? Celebrate National Trails Day with Us!

Join us for a scenic and challenging 6-mile hike through one of the most stunning, remote areas in the county—from Eagle Peak Ranch to Bathtub Creek Preserve, our hidden gem near the iconic Cedar Creek Falls.

This isn’t just a hike—it’s an adventure with purpose. You’ll trek through rugged landscapes, climbing and descending across diverse terrain—from oak woodlands to chaparral and sage scrub—while helping us improve trails by mapping signage for future hikers.

Our journey begins at Eagle Peak Ranch, winding through Forest Service land, passing our South Rim property, and reaching Easy Hill before arriving at Bathtub Creek Preserve. To facilitate the return trip, we’ll park cars along Eagle Peak Road to shuttle participants back to the starting point.

Please bring your lunch or snacks to enjoy along the trail, and be sure to pack plenty of water and essential hiking gear for this full-day wilderness adventure.

This event takes place in rugged, remote terrain. Stay close to our experienced staff and volunteers throughout the hike. Wildlife and environmental hazards (like rattlesnakes, poison oak, and mountain lions) may be present—your safety is our priority.

What is Eagle Peak Preserve?

Eagle Peak Preserve offers breathtaking views of the Upper San Diego River Gorge and serves as the flagship of the San Diego River Park Foundation, encompassing more than 1,000 acres, along with a 110-acre conservation easement. This preserve network is a vital part of the San Diego River's ecosystem, featuring numerous tributaries, including cold-water streams, and is recognized as one of the most biologically diverse areas in the country. Various habitats can be found within the preserve, including native grasslands, coastal sage scrub, and Engelmann oak woodlands.

About the Event

Are you ready to turn your daily ride into a catalyst for change? Circulate San Diego is partnering with the San Diego River Park Foundation’s One-Mile Action Crew for a high-impact Community Mobility Assessment.

By documenting the lived experiences of cyclists on this route, we provide the essential data needed to advocate for a safer, more connected San Diego. Your participation helps us transform the San Diego River corridor by turning real-world observations into actionable improvements.

The Route & Mission

We will embark on a ride along the San Diego River Trail, starting at Old Town and turning around at Grant Park. This route was specifically chosen to evaluate areas and critical infrastructure gaps, as well as enjoy the San Diego River Trail, and learn a route for future rides. Please note: Parts of our assessment will take us onto surface streets with unmarked bike paths. To ensure everyone’s comfort and safety, we will be riding together as a unified group through these sections to document the current road conditions.

Option 5 mile ride, with Trolley Ride from Rio Vista back to Old Town. 

Option 10 mile ride, on bike the entire way back to Old Town. 

Your bicycle and a helmet (required).

A smartphone or camera for observation points. 

Water bottle.

(Optional) Trolley card or Pronto App, if you choose to take the trolley back, rather than roundtrip bike ride.

One-Mile Action Crew (O-MAC) is a passionate group of riders that meets Second Fridays along the San Diego River. We are dedicated to the hands-on stewardship of the SD River Trail by tackling focused improvements one mile at a time. Our core activities are to show up, cleanup, and fixup the San Diego River Trail & Bikeway.

Looking for a volunteer opportunity that allows you to support a healthy river while interacting with a group of like-minded people? Come out with our core volunteer team to assist with River Clean-Ups! If you don't mind getting dirty and doing some trail blazing then this may be the perfect fit for you.

Each year, San Diego River Park Foundation volunteers remove more than 200,000 pounds of trash from our River. Without our amazing volunteers, this trash would be left to pollute native animal habitats, create unsightly piles in our parks and public spaces, leach contaminants into the water, and could be washed out into our ocean and beaches!

Join us for a unique opportunity to explore this stunning open space preserve located in the headwaters of the San Diego River. As a volunteer, you’ll connect with fellow nature lovers, soak in the beauty of the landscape, and maybe even spot wildlife like deer or wild turkeys! Together, we’ll help care for this conserved land by clearing fallen trees and repairing recreational trails — vital work that keeps the preserve healthy and accessible for all to enjoy.

This Preserve Stewards event takes place from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm on San Diego River Park Foundation preserves near Julian or Descanso, approximately a 1.5-hour drive from downtown San Diego.

For years, parents and chaperones have joined us on student field trips and shared one consistent wish: “I wish they offered these field trips for adults too!” 

So, we listened.

The San Diego River Park Foundation is thrilled to invite families of all ages to experience our immersive Natural LAW Education Program—a series of hands-on learning adventures designed to deepen your connection to the San Diego River, its rich ecology, and its cultural significance.

These field trips are FREE, fun, and crafted to create meaningful outdoor memories together while inspiring the next generation of environmental stewards.

Join us this Memorial Day Weekend for a wild and rugged hike into one of San Diego’s most iconic landscapes! This isn’t just a workout—it’s a rare chance to retrieve wildlife cameras that have been quietly capturing the secret lives of mountain lions, gray foxes, mule deer, and even elusive ringtail cats for over three months.

We’ll ascend to the top of our property near El Capitan Mountain, hiking a challenging 11-mile out-and-back trail with a total elevation gain of 3,579 feet. Please Note: This hike is strenuous and should only be undertaken by individuals who are comfortable hiking up steep terrain. This hike is rated “Hard” on AllTrails and is not for the faint of heart—but it is for those who love nature, want to contribute to conservation, and are up for an unforgettable experience. For more information about the hike, please follow THIS LINK to the AllTrails website.

Each year, San Diego River Park Foundation volunteers remove more than 200,000 pounds of trash from our River. Without our amazing volunteers, this trash would be left to pollute native animal habitats, create unsightly piles in our parks and public spaces, leach contaminants into the water, and could be washed out into our ocean and beaches!

Escape the city and become a steward of the breathtaking land at Eagle Peak Ranch! Join us for a unique opportunity to explore this stunning open space preserve located in the headwaters of the San Diego River. As a volunteer, you’ll connect with fellow nature lovers, soak in the beauty of the landscape, and maybe even spot wildlife like deer or wild turkeys! Together, we’ll help care for this conserved land by clearing fallen trees and repairing recreational trails — vital work that keeps the preserve healthy and accessible for all to enjoy.

This Preserve Stewards event takes place from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm on San Diego River Park Foundation preserves near Julian or Descanso, approximately a 1.5-hour drive from downtown San Diego. 

Get outside, give back, and experience the joy of spending time in the wild beauty of San Diego!

No experience necessary!

Must be 14 years or older! Those under 16 need supervision. Ages 16 and 17 are allowed alone but with a parent signature

So, we listened.

The San Diego River Park Foundation is thrilled to invite families of all ages to experience our immersive Natural LAW Education Program—a series of hands-on learning adventures designed to deepen your connection to the San Diego River, its rich ecology, and its cultural significance.

These field trips are FREE, fun, and crafted to create meaningful outdoor memories together while inspiring the next generation of environmental stewards.

The majority of this work will take place in Mission Valley, putting up flyers at outdoor kiosks and local businesses. This is perfect for someone who wants to make an impact with a flexible schedule.

Flyer drop off locations are typically pre-determined, but let us know if you think we should flyer at a place you don't already see on the list! NOTE: Flyer drop off locations will be sent to you AFTER meeting in person or virtually on Calendly.

Thank you so much for your interest in volunteering with our River Assessment Field Team!

The River Assessment Field Team (R.A.F.T.) performs reconnaissance on different segments of the San Diego River and documents trash sites using a smartphone-based mapping app. The data that the team collects is used by trash removal teams, researchers, community members and policy makers. 

R.A.F.T. also works to end homelessness in the riverbed and considers this an intersectional issue with environmental stewardship. Volunteers help collect data on encampment locations and share it with our homelessness outreach partners so they can locate individuals who need help with housing placement and other social services. We also hand out care kits to provide hygiene items, water, and snacks to people living in the riverbed. Sign up for the twice-weekly surveys below to help with these efforts. We also create care kits and conduct 3 census events per year. R.A.F.T. is best-suited for repeat volunteers over the age of 18 who are available on Tuesday or Friday mornings. Volunteers are requested to attend 2-8 events per month. Due to the nature of these events, we do not authorize community service hour verification. Locations are chosen one week in advance and are shared via email. Some locations have challenging access, sometimes requiring that volunteers walk through dense vegetation, bend over under trees and vegetation, or climb down steep embankments. Closed-toed shoes and long pants are required. Sun protection and water are highly recommended. Volunteers should also be aware that they are likely to encounter individuals experiencing homelessness.

Prior to the first outing, participants must complete a virtual training (30 min) which goes through our data collection methods and protocols on how to use the Mappler K3 smartphone app, which connects to our online database here.

All RAFT events are led by a staff member or trained volunteer. Leaders provide on-site training to all participants. Details for each event (including the meeting location) are given via email the week before.

We would love to have you come join RAFT! By volunteering to document river threats, you can be a citizen scientist and help improve the future of our river.

After applying for the R.A.F.T. team through this event, our team will review your application and add you to the team. At this point, R.A.F.T. events will be visible to you, and you will also begin to receive emails regarding location and details.

The River Rescuers are a fun group of dedicated volunteers! This group of repeat volunteers currently meet on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. They support the Clean and Green Team by doing pre-event and post-event site visits, removing trash sites that are not suited for a large community clean-up or too difficult to reach. They are a small but mighty team!

Clean-ups take place on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. Unlike our much larger, more accessible Clean & Green events, River Rescues are small, informal, fast-paced, and often unsupervised. They are designed for experienced repeat volunteers over the age of 18 with a true passion for cleaning the San Diego River. River Rescues may be volunteer-led without River Park staff present.

The adventurous River Rescue team often targets locations that may not be appropriate for our larger community events. Some locations have challenging access and long hauls, sometimes requiring that volunteers walk through dense vegetation, climb down steep embankments, or haul trash up to ¾ mile. The majority of the trash they clean up has been left behind by individuals experiencing homelessness. Volunteers can expect a challenging morning of removing items such as mattresses, clothing, shopping carts, and often unsavory items such as needles.

Due to the nature of these events, we do not authorize community service hour verification for River Rescues. Locations are chosen one week in advance and are shared via email. Chosen locations are based on need, using trash data collected by our assessment team. Due to the high risk of Hepatitis A exposure, we strongly encourage volunteers to be vaccinated for the Hepatitis A virus prior to participating.

If you don’t need community service hours and are up for the challenge, this is a great opportunity for volunteers looking to work hard, get outdoors, and make new friends. Some of the volunteers have been doing so with us for over a decade!

Handy and looking for a community beautification project? The Point Loma Native Plant Garden has a solid platform railing overlooking the garden meadow, but still is in need of some final improvements! To ensure the highest standard of safety, we are looking to add additional horizontal beams to finish this railing that started life as two different Eagle Scout projects over the years. You source and cut the wood at home and we'll meet you at the Point Loma Native Plant Garden to assist in installation and painting!

When one of the murals needs some sprucing up, we call the Art Restoration Team! This is a great opportunity for emerging artists, community artists, and families to create something larger than themselves and spend some quality time along the river!

While we put on clean-up events throughout the riverbed, people often want to make a difference in their own neighborhood - which may not be close to the river. This Bingo Card gives you plenty of challenges, from doing a clean-up during sunset to creating your own clean-up playlist. If you get bingo, or even better, complete the entire sheet, you can get a prize - just don't forget to take pictures for each challenge as proof!

Would you like to share your outdoor knowledge and/or education? Do you love getting both adults and kids excited about nature? We'd love to have you on our team!

Field Trips:

We often put on field trips for children's groups, which include a nature walk, collecting bug samples in the river, then looking at them under a microscope and identifying them. We need someone who can "make sense of nature" - someone who is listening to and absorbing their surroundings and making sense of it, so they can help education the children. Examples of this are saying "This is stinging nettle, don't touch this!" or "This is edible!".

We offer field trips Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. We typically need volunteers for a 3.5 hour window, starting between 8:30am and 9:30am. We typically hold field trips in Ocean Beach or Mission Valley. If you'd like to volunteer for a specific event rather than for field trips, you can go to the Education Program Page and sign up for our upcoming events.

If you don't have a lot of outdoor knowledge, we still need your help! Volunteering can be as simple as staying with the tent and guarding belongings, or assisting with educational activities (training provided).

Docents:

We are looking to start expanding on our educational opportunities, and potentially offering tours along the San Diego River. If you have knowledge of the San Diego River, have experience in the docent field, or are even just willing to learn, we'd love to have you! You don't have to be an expert in the field - but if you have knowledge and would love to share it with our current and future generations, sign up here and we'll get in contact with you regarding how you can help!
