Join us to help remove non-native invasive plant species from the San Diego Estuary! Join our Invasive Management, Plant Assessment and Conservation Team (IMPACT) to help us remove invasive plants, such as wild radish, black mustard, crown daisy, and more. You will also have the opportunity to plant native species and engage in other aspects of habitat restoration! By doing so, we help restore San Diego River watershed to its natural state, support the return of native pollinators and wildlife to their local range, improve water quality in the river, and protect endangered species.
Focusing on the San Diego River Mouth is crucial as it is a highly sensitive habitat, home to numerous endangered and native species, and preserving it is essential for future generations. Restoring this area supports vulnerable species and creates a healthier, more accessible space for the community to experience the San Diego River in its natural state.
This is a huge effort and a great opportunity for those looking to try fieldwork, make a difference, and explore the beautiful riparian habitat! As we say: "many hands make light work!
What to Expect: Many of these invasive plant species are small annuals that require hand pulling, so be prepared to get dirty. Please wear a hat and sunscreen, along with long sleeves, long pants, and sturdy closed-toed shoes for protection. All necessary tools will be provided, but feel free to bring your own gloves or safety glasses if preferred. Don't forget to bring plenty of drinking water and snacks to stay energized throughout the day.
Who Would Be Perfect for the Team: We welcome individuals from all walks of life. Retired folks can use their time and experience to contribute to the environment, while students seeking hands-on experience in habitat restoration can gain valuable knowledge and skills. Families are also encouraged to participate, as our activities are a great way to bond and instill a sense of stewardship for the natural world in children. Please note: The meeting location is NEAR the address listed. We will meet at the small grassy area between the main parking lot, the San Diego River Bikeway, and Ocean Villa Inn.
