Volunteer: One-Mile Action Club - Roll & Record 12/19

Join the One-Mile Action Crew (O-MAC) for a group ride. We are a passionate community, dedicated to the hands-on stewardship of the SD River Trail by tackling focused improvements one mile at a time.

Our core activities is Roll & Record—where we ride (all wheels welcome: bikes, wheelchair, skateboards, skates, blades...) to survey and gather critical data along the San Diego River Trail & Bikeway—and the immediate cleanup and trail maintenance needed in that specific segment. Come make new friends, combine light exercise with impactful social good, and finish your rewarding community effort with a celebratory coffee social!

Start Location:

*UPDATED* Park at Robb Field, Peninsula Tennis Club, 2525 Bacon St, San Diego, CA 92107

We will meet at the parking lots in front of Peninsula Tennis Club, that run parallel to the River Trail/Estuary, and then ride up to the trail together.

Followed by coffee Social at OB Coffee Cycle Roasting!

We will begin at OB Walk Bike Trail in Ocean Beach at the Robb Field parking lots along the San Diego River Trail & Bikeway, with an introduction and brief training on safe riding and recording data. Then we will take an enjoyable group ride approximately 1-mile and back (2-miles round trip), collecting data and recording observations along the river trail.

THE ROUTE: This scenic segment follows the river through beautiful estuary where you can observe diverse wildlife and critical bird habitat.

The trail is completely separate from traffic.

You will pass through areas with urban interfaces and may encounter people experiencing homelessness who are living along the riverbed.

This is a NO DROP ride, meaning no one will be left behind (ex: flat tire)

If you are skating, this is an EASY to INTERMEDIATE path and we highly advise you to bring gummy/soft wheels and knee pads/wrist guards at minimum.

All Wheels Welcome.

Note: if you are unable to join Dec. 19th, but interested in future events please take this brief One-Mile Action Club interest survey.

Join us to get outside, immerse yourself in nature, and make a positive impact for the San Diego River! Join a community of like-minded volunteers working to restore the San Diego River Estuary- a highly sensitive habitat that is home to several endangered species. By removing invasive plants, you’ll directly support the return of native pollinators and wildlife, prevent erosion, improve water quality, and protect endangered species, like the California Least Tern. Together, we will create a healthier, more accessible natural space for the entire community to enjoy. This is a huge effort and a great opportunity for those looking to try out field work, connect with fellow nature lovers, make a meaningful difference for a critical and fragile ecosystem, and explore the beautiful estuary habitat! We’d love to see you there!

What to Expect: Many of these invasive plant species are small annuals that require hand pulling, so be prepared to get dirty. All necessary tools will be provided, but feel free to bring your own gloves or safety glasses if preferred.

Who Would Be Perfect for the Team: We welcome individuals from all walks of life! Retired folks can use their time and experience to contribute to the environment, while students seeking hands-on experience in habitat restoration can gain valuable knowledge and skills. Volunteer: Winter Solstice Sunset Hike at Lillian Hill - Sunday, 12/21/2025

Join the San Diego River Park Foundation for a special Winter Solstice sunset hike to the top of one of our newly acquired open space properties, Lillian Hill Preserve. A top Lillian Hill, you'll enjoy breathtaking views of Three Sisters Waterfall and the expansive San Diego River Gorge, including Eagle Peak, El Capitan Mountain, and other mountain tops in San Diego! Please bring a headlamp or flashlight and plenty of drinking water for the hike.

We also recommend closed-toed shoes and long pants. This hike is a 1.5-mile out-and-back trail with a 270-foot elevation gain. It is considered 'easy to moderate,' but should not be undertaken by individuals who are not comfortable on uneven trail surfaces or hiking uphill. For safety reasons, no pets are allowed at this event.

Please note: This event is located in the heart of a wilderness area. For your safety, stay close to our experienced staff and volunteers throughout the event. Potential hazards include rattlesnakes, mountain lions, poison oak, and loose footing.

What is Lillian Hill?

An expansive 80-acre property at Lillian Hill was placed on the market for potentially five building sites. Surrounded by National Forest, its development would have had a significant impact. We set out to buy this land to conserve it forever for the badgers, cougars, eagles, falcons, majestic oaks, and more. Now that it has been purchased, we can begin removing the scars of decades of land use and start the healing process.

Directions: Google Link

Attire: Long pants and closed-toe shoes are highly recommended with layers!

Items to Bring: Headlamp, drinking water, light jacket, and a snack.

Additional Notes:

Download directions before leaving Descanso, as cell service is spotty in this area. The nearest restroom is located at the Three Sisters Trailhead parking lot, five minutes further up Boulder Creek Road.To reach the preserve, you’ll travel on a dirt road, which is in good condition and suitable for sedan cars.

For safety reasons, no pets are allowed at this event.

All ages welcome!

Volunteer: San Diego River Mouth Habitat Restoration - Sunday, 12/21/25

Families are also encouraged to participate, as our activities are a great way to bond and instill a sense of stewardship for the natural world in children. If you are passionate about making a difference and want to help restore the San Diego River, you would be an ideal fit for our team.

Please note: The meeting location is NEAR the address listed. We will meet at the small grassy area between the main parking lot, the San Diego River Bikeway, and Ocean Villa Inn.

DONATE: Care Kits

The San Diego River Park Foundation partners with service providers to help use our knowledge of and access to the San Diego Riverbed and some tributary canyons to connect people experiencing homelessness with access to resources and pathways out of riverbed encampments.

Our River Assessment Field Team members distribute Care Kits to our neighbors experiencing homelessness and use them as an engagement tool to build relationships. We also distribute these items during the rainy season, when our team goes out to inform people living in the riverbed during storms to notify them of hazards and potential flooding.

Our Care Kit inventory is purely donation based, so every little bit helps!

Volunteer: Planting and Habitat Restoration at the San Diego River Mouth - Saturday, 1/10/2026

Join us to get outside, immerse yourself in nature, and make a positive impact for the San Diego River! Join a community of like-minded volunteers working to restore the San Diego River Estuary- a highly sensitive habitat that is home to several endangered species. By removing invasive plants and seeding/planting native ones, you’ll directly support the return of native pollinators and wildlife, prevent erosion, improve water quality, and protect endangered species, like the California Least Tern.

What to Expect: We will be seeding and planting California native species, and removing non-native invasive species to help restore the native habitat. Many of these invasive plant species are small annuals that require hand pulling, so be prepared to get dirty. All necessary tools will be provided, but feel free to bring your own gloves or safety glasses if preferred.

Please note: The meeting location is NEAR the address listed. We will meet at the small grassy area between the main parking lot, the San Diego River Bikeway, and Ocean Villa Inn.

Here are a few tips to help you prepare for the event:

Attire: Long Pants and closed-toe shoes are required

Items to Bring: Reusable water bottle, hat, other forms of sun protection, snacks

Weather: Light rain will not cancel the event

For safety reasons, no pets are allowed at this event

There are restroom facilities at this location

No experience necessary!

All ages are welcome, but those under 16 need supervision. Ages 16 and 17 are allowed alone but with a parent signature

Volunteer: Shore Clean-Up at the Estuary - Saturday 1/17/26

This particular clean-up is a joint event with our kayak clean-up! There will be kayakers out on the water (a unique experience) helping clean-up the river at the same time as our shore volunteers. This is usually not permitted in this protected area, but we have received special permission!

Are you looking to learn more or sign up for the kayak portion of the clean-up? Click here to learn more about the kayak clean-up and/or sign up!

Please note: Signing up on this page will sign you up for the shore clean-up only - NOT the kayak portion of the event

Join us on January 17th from 10 AM - Noon for our monthly community river clean-up! Come work outdoors with like-minded members of the community to help remove thousands of pounds of trash in just three hours!

Each year, San Diego River Park Foundation volunteers remove more than 200,000 pounds of trash from our namesake waterway. Without our community, this trash would be left to pollute native animal habitats, parks and public spaces, leach contaminants into the water, and wash out into our ocean and beaches

Park + Meet: Vacant dirt lot or along the Old Sea World Drive, just east of the W. Mission Bay Dr. bridge. Due to the Kayak Clean-Up, this area will be busy. You will most likely need to park far east of the bridge and walk to our meet spot!

Join us to get outside, immerse yourself in nature, and make a positive impact for the San Diego River! Join a welcoming community of like-minded volunteers working to restore the beautiful lower course of the San Diego River, a hidden natural treasure right in the heart of the city!

By removing invasive plant species, you’ll directly support the return of native pollinators and wildlife, improve water quality,  protect endangered species, and reduce wildlife and flood risk. Together, we will create a healthier, more accessible natural space for the entire community to enjoy.

What to Expect: Many of these invasive plant species are small annuals that require either weed whacking or hand pulling, so be prepared to get dirty. Please wear a hat and sunscreen, along with long sleeves, long pants, and sturdy closed-toed shoes for protection. All necessary tools will be provided, but feel free to bring your own gloves or safety glasses if preferred. Don't forget to bring plenty of drinking water and snacks to stay energized throughout the day.

Volunteer: San Diego River Mouth Habitat Restoration - Tuesday, 1/27/2026

Here are a few tips to help you prepare for the event:

Attire: Long Pants and closed-toe shoes are requiredItems to Bring: Reusable water bottle, hat, other forms of sun protectionWeather: Light rain will not cancel the eventFor safety reasons, no pets are allowed at this eventThere are restroom facilities at this location. No experience necessary!Family friendly with parental supervision!

Volunteer: Join the R.A.F.T. Team!

Thank you so much for your interest in volunteering with our River Assessment Field Team!

The River Assessment Field Team (R.A.F.T.) performs reconnaissance on different segments of the San Diego River and documents trash sites using a smartphone-based mapping app. The data that the team collects is used by trash removal teams, researchers, community members and policy makers.

R.A.F.T. also works to end homelessness in the riverbed and considers this an intersectional issue with environmental stewardship. Volunteers help collect data on encampment locations and share it with our homelessness outreach partners so they can locate individuals who need help with housing placement and other social services. We also hand out care kits to provide hygiene items, water, and snacks to people living in the riverbed. Sign up for the twice-weekly surveys below to help with these efforts. We also create care kits and conduct 3 census events per year. If you are interested in getting added to a care kit party interest list click here.  If you are interested in receiving notifications on upcoming census events, please click here.

R.A.F.T. is best-suited for repeat volunteers over the age of 18 who are available on Tuesday or Friday mornings. Volunteers are requested to attend 2-8 events per month. Due to the nature of these events, we do not authorize community service hour verification. Locations are chosen one week in advance and are shared via email. Some locations have challenging access, sometimes requiring that volunteers walk through dense vegetation, bend over under trees and vegetation, or climb down steep embankments. Closed-toed shoes and long pants are required. Sun protection and water are highly recommended. Volunteers should also be aware that they are likely to encounter individuals experiencing homelessness.

Prior to the first outing, participants must complete a virtual training (30 min) which goes through our data collection methods and protocols on how to use the Mappler K3 smartphone app, which connects to our online database here.

All RAFT events are led by a staff member or trained volunteer. Leaders provide on-site training to all participants. Details for each event (including the meeting location) are given via email the week before.

We would love to have you come join RAFT! By volunteering to document river threats, you can be a citizen scientist and help improve the future of our river.

After applying for the R.A.F.T. team through this event, our team will review your application and add you to the team. At this point, R.A.F.T. events will be visible to you, and you will also begin to receive emails regarding location and details.

Volunteer: Join the River Rescue Team!

The River Rescuers are a fun group of dedicated volunteers! This group of repeat volunteers currently meet on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. They support the Clean and Green Team by doing pre-event and post-event site visits, removing trash sites that are not suited for a large community clean-up or too difficult to reach. They are a small but mighty team!

Clean-ups take place on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. Unlike our much larger, more accessible Clean & Green events, River Rescues are small, informal, fast-paced, and often unsupervised. They are designed for experienced repeat volunteers over the age of 18 with a true passion for cleaning the San Diego River. River Rescues may be volunteer-led without River Park staff present.

The adventurous River Rescue team often targets locations that may not be appropriate for our larger community events. Some locations have challenging access and long hauls, sometimes requiring that volunteers walk through dense vegetation, climb down steep embankments, or haul trash up to ¾ mile. The majority of the trash they clean up has been left behind by individuals experiencing homelessness. Volunteers can expect a challenging morning of removing items such as mattresses, clothing, shopping carts, and often unsavory items such as needles.

Due to the nature of these events, we do not authorize community service hour verification for River Rescues. Locations are chosen one week in advance and are shared via email. Chosen locations are based on need, using trash data collected by our assessment team. Due to the high risk of Hepatitis A exposure, we strongly encourage volunteers to be vaccinated for the Hepatitis A virus prior to participating.

If you don’t need community service hours and are up for the challenge, this is a great opportunity for volunteers looking to work hard, get outdoors, and make new friends. Some of the volunteers have been doing so with us for over a decade!

Volunteer: Virtual Team Up to Clean Up

While we put on clean-up events throughout the riverbed, people often want to make a difference in their own neighborhood - which may not be close to the river. This Bingo Card gives you plenty of challenges, from doing a clean-up during sunset to creating your own clean-up playlist. If you get bingo, or even better, complete the entire sheet, you can get a prize - just don't forget to take pictures for each challenge as proof!

Volunteer: Outdoor Education Volunteer

Would you like to share your outdoor knowledge and/or education? Do you love getting both adults and kids excited about nature? We'd love to have you on our team!

Field Trips:

We often put on field trips for children's groups, which include a nature walk, collecting bug samples in the river, then looking at them under a microscope and identifying them. We need someone who can "make sense of nature" - someone who is listening to and absorbing their surroundings and making sense of it, so they can help education the children. Examples of this are saying "This is stinging nettle, don't touch this!" or "This is edible!".

We offer field trips Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. We typically need volunteers for a 3.5 hour window, starting between 8:30am and 9:30am. We typically hold field trips in Ocean Beach or Mission Valley. If you'd like to volunteer for a specific event rather than for field trips, you can go to the Education Program Page and sign up for our upcoming events.

If you don't have a lot of outdoor knowledge, we still need your help! Volunteering can be as simple as staying with the tent and guarding belongings, or assisting with educational activities (training provided).

Docents:

We are looking to start expanding on our educational opportunities, and potentially offering tours along the San Diego River. If you have knowledge of the San Diego River, have experience in the docent field, or are even just willing to learn, we'd love to have you! You don't have to be an expert in the field - but if you have knowledge and would love to share it with our current and future generations, sign up here and we'll get in contact with you regarding how you can help!
