Who We Are

After the Grant Family generously donated 17 acres of land, The San Diego River Park Foundation and our community worked on plans to turn the abandoned sand mining pit into an exciting new nature education and eco-park in the heart of Mission Valley. The dream turned into a reality.

Grant Park is acting as a home base for Education and other programs and is set to provide free nature learning experiences along the San Diego River to 10,000 students per year. Grant Park promotes equitable access to the lifelong benefits of nature connections through a focus on engaging underserved youth and being accessible by public transport.

It will be a safe haven of green space for surrounding communities and a place for all to celebrate and enjoy the beautiful San Diego River Watershed.

Although, Grant Park is not yet open, there are still several volunteer opportunities at this amazing center in the heart of our city.

What We Do

Education Docents:

You can help connect more students with nature and create the next generation of River Stewards by becoming an Education Docent at Grant Park! If you have a passion for nature and love working with kids, you will love to see the thrill of a child’s face when they discover and learn about the river’s flora and fauna.  Opportunities are also available to help at community outreach events. If interested, please email Die Spittle, Manager of Volunteer Programs at die@sandiegoriver.org

Bird Survey:

Witness the San Diego River ecosystem’s biodiversity and beauty by joining bird experts to observe and count birds that call the Grant Park home! You will be helping bird conservation efforts, while getting a sneak peek of our River Center at Grant Park’s progress.

Mission Valley Gardening Club:

Come enjoy nature and help care for Grant Park by joining the community in vegetation removal and weeding, trash pick-up, graffiti removal, and occasional planting. Your efforts will be a huge help to get it ready for thousands of youth and community members to connect to the River right in the middle of our city!
