Join the San Diego River Park Foundation for an exciting mistletoe harvest at Eagle Peak Ranch while going on a short hike! From the preserve's hilltops, you'll enjoy breathtaking views of Wynola Valley and the surrounding San Diego mountains and scenic peaks. Please bring plenty of drinking water and wear closed-toed shoes and long pants. For safety reasons, no pets are allowed at this event. Collecting mistletoe is a delightful way to prepare for the holiday season while also contributing to ecological balance.
San Diego mistletoe (Phoradendron californicum) is a native plant that can often be found in oak trees, providing critical habitat and food for various wildlife species. As a hemiparasitic plant, mistletoe derives some of its nutrients from its host trees, but it can also photosynthesize to produce its own food. Historically, mistletoe has held significant cultural meaning, especially during the holiday season, symbolizing love and goodwill; hanging it in doorways was believed to bring good luck and ensure that those who passed underneath would be kissed!
The event will run from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM, but the preserve will be open for an additional hour if you’d like to enjoy a picnic at our picnic tables by the ponds.
Please note: This event takes place in the heart of a wilderness area. For your safety, stay close to our experienced staff and volunteers throughout the event. Potential hazards include rattlesnakes, mountain lions, poison oak, and loose footing.
What is Eagle Peak Ranch?
