Join us to help remove non-native invasive plant species from the lower San Diego River Watershed! Join our Invasive Management, Plant Assessment and Conservation Team (IMPACT) to help us remove a variety of small invasive annual weeds including crown daisy, wild radish, and more. By doing so, we help restore the natural riparian habitat, support the return of native pollinators and wildlife to their local range, improve water quality in the river, and protect endangered species.
Focusing on the lower watershed is crucial because this native habitat, nestled in the heart of the city and near the river mouth, faces unique urban pressures. Without native vegetation to filter runoff, pollution and erosion can increase. Restoring this area supports vulnerable species and creates a healthier, more accessible space for the community to experience the San Diego River in its natural state.
This is a huge effort and a great opportunity for those looking to try fieldwork, make a difference, and explore the beautiful riparian habitat! As we say: "many hands make light work!"
IMPACT welcomes individuals from all walks of life. Retired folks can use their time and experience to contribute to the environment, while students seeking hands-on experience in habitat restoration can gain valuable knowledge and skills. Families are also encouraged to participate, as our activities are a great way to bond and instill a sense of stewardship for the natural world in children. What to Expect: Many of these invasive plant species are small annuals that require either weed whacking or hand pulling, so be prepared to get dirty. Please wear a hat and sunscreen, along with long sleeves, long pants, and sturdy closed-toed shoes for protection. All necessary tools will be provided, but feel free to bring your own gloves or safety glasses if preferred. Don't forget to bring plenty of drinking water and snacks to stay energized throughout the day.

- Items to Bring: Reusable water bottle, hat, other forms of sun protection
- Weather: Light rain will not cancel the event
- For safety reasons, no pets are allowed at this event
- There are no restroom facilities at this location, with the closest restrooms located at the mall, which opens around 10 a.m.
- No experience necessary!
