We are seeking volunteers to help collect trash but this isn't a standard SDRPF clean-up. Volunteers are needed to help with a research project in partnership with San Diego State University and NOAA's Marine Debris Program. We are interested in studying how drones might be used to aid in surveying for trash in natural areas and waterways!
For this event, we are seeking volunteers interested in participating in this research project. Activities will include collecting all trash (pieces over 3 cm) from a marked plot area, and sorting this trash by type.
Volunteers should expect uneven terrain, pushing through bushes and vegetation to look for trash, and ongoing coordination during the event to ensure consistent collection and survey protocols. An interest in learning about research methodology is welcome! Leaders will oversee and direct the collection and sorting, so no experience is necessary. All tools and training will be provided. Volunteers should wear closed-toe sturdy shoes, clothes that can get dirty, and bring a reusable water bottle.
Location: Mission Valley Preserve (MVP). Exact meeting location TBD.
