Description

Welcome to our annual Headwaters Assessments in which volunteers go out to explore the headwaters of the San Diego River as well as collect data for our organization and other land managers! This year we are focusing our efforts on documenting the Southwestern pond turtle (Actinemys pallida), an endemic freshwater turtle in central/southern California.

During this in-person event, we will cover the basic protocols and procedures for conducting and recording observations. Recording observations will include using hand held GPS devices and cameras. Volunteers will learn how to record observations including threatened and endangered species, hydromodifications, non-native invasive species, and more. In addition, we will go over general safety and ways to limit your impact while hiking through these pristine areas.

This in-person training session will be two hours from 9am to 11am on April 22th. The meeting location is at Mast Park parking lot in Santee: 9125 Carlton Hills Blvd, Santee, CA 92071. Please wear a hat and sunscreen, long sleeves, long pants and sturdy close-toed shoes. In addition, please bring water and a snack. We hope to see you there!
