Join our Preserve Steward's Day at Descanso Pond Preserve! Descanso Pond Preserve is an awe-inspiring property with breathtaking riparian habitats. Nestled within its scenic landscape lies a remarkable opportunity for us to nurture and maintain this area. Come meet fellow nature-loving friends and care for beautiful Descanso Pond Preserve, one of the preserves we acquired for land conservation of the headwaters of the San Diego River. Together, we will maintain trails, care for oak trees, remove invasive non-native plants, tend to native plants, repair fences, install irrigation, and more! Take the opportunity to visit our stunning preserve and see what we can accomplish together!
All Preserve Stewards events take place from 8:00 a.m. - Noon on San Diego River Park Foundation preserves near Julian or Descanso, approximately a 1-hour drive from downtown San Diego.
In the spirit of being natural stewards, we encourage you volunteers to carpool. Volunteers can spend even more time with like-minded people who are all coming in the interest of environmental conservation, while reducing vehicle emissions. However, carpooling will not be organized by the San Diego River Park Foundation and arrangements must be made between volunteers. Volunteers are responsible for the decisions they make when carpooling, including choices regarding safety. The San Diego River Park Foundation is not liable for any risks associated with carpooling.
Location: The event is located at Descanso Pond Preserve in Descanso, approximately a 45-minute drive from downtown San Diego. We will meet at the Park & Ride Lot #29 outside Descanso, 7920 Japatul Valley Rd., and carpool in a few cars with high clearance. Please arrive at the Park & Ride 10-15 minutes before 8 a.m. The drive to the Preserve will then take around 10 minutes. Here is a link to a google doc with more instructions: Park & Ride Lot #29
Here are a few tips to help you prepare for the event:
- Attire: Long Pants and closed-toe shoes are required
- Other Items to Bring: Reusable water bottle, hat, other forms of sun protection
- Please bring plenty of drinking water, snacks and lunch. We sill start at 8am and finish by 11am, and enjoy lunch together in the shade from 11am - 12pm.
- Weather: Light rain will not cancel the event
- For safety reasons, no pets are allowed at this event
- There are no restroom facilities at this location
- No experience necessary!
- Must be 14 years or older
