Are you interesting in joining a team of community scientists to help better understand the trash and pollution along the San Diego River? River Blitz is the event for you! This event is a field survey of the lower 20+ miles of the San Diego River. 3-6 person teams of community scientists walk the riverbed in the City of Santee and San Diego and document what they see on a special app, called Mappler. This data informs our clean-up and survey programs throughout the year, plays an important role in developing a State of the River report, and is shared with multiple partners. This is a wonderful opportunity for members of the community who are interested in environmental conservation, community science, outdoor adventures, data analysis, and community engagement.
Our Clean River Program updates this data year-round, but this is our unique opportunity to get a snapshot in time of exactly what the riverbed is looking like before the rainy season begins! Each team gets a specific segment they are responsible for documenting. They are guided by a trained leader who works to ensure it is a safe, fun and meaningful experience. Volunteers should expect to walk long distances, get dirty, possibly traverse through treacherous terrain, and have a great time!
Weekend 1 - October 19th and 20th: San Diego
Weekend 2 - October 26th & 27th: Santee/East County
*Volunteers will receive event information via email 3-4 days BEFORE the event! (please check your SPAM folder if you don't receive event info)
In November, we use this data for our Great River Cleanup; our biggest clean-up of the year! Want to join that too? Click here!
